Your Guide to Minneapolis Theater this Fall

Minneapolis is the proud home of a strong performing arts scene with a number of gorgeous venues with stages that have held countless productions. To give travelers a taste of some of the most anticipated shows coming this fall, with a little sprinkle of background on each venue thrown in, we put together this brief guide to the local theater near Rand Tower Hotel this fall.

HENNEPIN THEATRE TRUST

The Hennepin Theatre Trust is 22 years old, and it was designed to preserve three beloved local performing arts venues — the State, Orpheum, and Pantages theaters. Located on Minneapolis’s Hennepin Avenue, each venue features a distinct design, remarkable history, and some upcoming shows worth checking out. Here are some examples that are on our radar:

ORPHEUM THEATRE

The Orpheum Theatre originally opened in 1921 and has since hosted performers such as the Marx Brothers, Count Basie, and productions of My Fair Lady and Fiddler On The Roof. As a part of this year’s Bank of America Broadway on Hennepin series, the venue will host Cats from October 25th-30th.

PANTAGES THEATRE

The Pantages opened in 1916 and was originally a vaudeville house. Over time, its programming expanded to include movies like Spartacus and West Side Story. Today, it plays home to a variety of productions. This October, it will host Mania The ABBA Tribute from October 13th-14th, comedian Mark Normand on October 22nd, and Joanne Shaw Taylor on October 29th.

STATE THEATRE

This 2,100-seat theater has been around since 1921, and it was once hailed as one of the most technically-advanced performance spaces in the country. It was once a movie house that had the largest screen west of the Mississippi, and today it hosts mostly musical and comedy acts. This fall you can catch Diana Krall on October 5th, and Leanne Morgan on October 7th. Demetri Martin will perform on October 20th and 21st too.
